The work consists of two found objects – soda cans that the artist found on the beach. Already Made 1 (Cans) is a commentary on the history of the readymade. The work is a reference to Jasper John’s Painted Bronze (Ale Cans), 1960 – two replicas of beer cans cast in bronze and hand-painted. While John’s gesture played on bringing the readymade back on the terrain of traditional sculpture, in Moudov’s version the cans are authentic readymades, transformed by the forces of nature itself. The sea water and the sun has smoothed the surface of the cans, creating objects, which hover somewhere in between pop art, readymade and minimalism.
