Border Flowers, 2025

Ivan Moudov’s “Border Flowers” was created from plastic waste collected along the Bulgarian-Turkish border and presented as an installation for the exhibition “Through the Prism of Borders – Episode 2” at the National History Museum.

Arranged in the museum’s courtyard, the waste resembled a meadow of flowers from afar, while up close it exposed its raw, unsettling nature. By relocating the landscape into the institution, Moudov turned discarded materials into art, confronting viewers with a reality that crosses national boundaries.

Before the exhibition opened, however, the museum removed the work—denying the role of the institution to legitimize and showcase art, and reducing the installation back to “ordinary garbage.”
