Coupons, 2011

The work is a comment on the practice of selling drinks at exhibition openings. For Ivan Moudov this act contradicts the very nature of “the ritual” of exhibition opening. The artist finds a way to sabotage it, by organizing a black market for drink coupons.  At the opening, Ivan Moudov arranges all of the coupons to be sold at a 50% discount from the actual cost of the drinks. A person hired to act as a black market dealer, distributes the coupons among the visitors.  His fee is paid by the coupons he sells. The complicated economy the artist introduces ultimately makes the gallery offer the drinks at no profit.
