empêche-pipi, 2024

Inspired by the so-called empêche-pipi, a sculpture with this shape takes on unique, authoritative characteristics. These concrete forms often burgeoning in the corners of French buildings are seemingly intended to prevent passers by from urinating on private and public property. Mudov discovered (the hard way) that if one urinates on an empêche-pipi, the urine will splash back onto his legs and fill his shoes. This architectural element, shaped like a mix between a small pine tree and a butt plug, combines both restriction and punishment. It functions like a kind of policeman, deterring and penalizing those who urinate in corners in a way that doesn’t rely on fines.
