New Hope, 2006

New Hope is an installation, which creates the feeling of anxiety and disaster that we are familiar with mostly from Hollywood movies. The installation is an elevator cabin that looks perfectly normal at first glance. However instead of behaving like an obedient transporting mechanism, the cabin “attacks” its user. Once the viewers enter the “elevator”, the ceiling and the floor start to move slowly towards each other, menacing to crush the people inside. Just like in a movie scene, the elevator stops shortly before it becomes too dangerous, offering the public a “narrow escape” and an adrenalin boost an exhibition visit rarely provides.
